The Mockingbird Foundation
The Mockingbird Foundation is a non-profit organization founded by Phish fans in 1996 to generate charitable proceeds from the Phish community.
And since we’re entirely volunteer – with no office, salaries, or paid staff – administrative costs are less than 2% of revenues! So far, we’ve distributed over $1,000,000 to support music education for children – hundreds of grants in all 50 states, with more on the way.
*Slave 12-07-97
Here's the funny thing. When I first heard Phish, I hated them. I was raised on the radio, so Phish music did not jive with my brain at first. Plus it was my husband's music vs. my music at the time, so I was in full Phish resistance mode for years. I went to my first show in 2003 and hated it. I remember being incredibly taken aback by the swell of cheering when the show started and from there it's like I blacked out. I don't think I was ready for that kind of intense energy and consciousness yet.
Then it all changed when I sent my husband off to NYC to see The Dead and I stayed home and listened to 12-07-97. As I listened to Slave from that show, I totally downloaded this vision of me dancing to Slave at Red Rocks. This was about 2 months before they came back to play Hampton.
The next day, I discovered the 7-11-91 show and heard Phish with horns for the first time ever. So playful and fun! The Lizards hooked me big time and I've been in love ever since.
I am happy to report that after doing the run in 2009 from Knoxville> Deer Creek, my life has never been the same. And I did make it to Red Rocks and experienced my first Slave - dream come true!!
