The Mockingbird Foundation
The Mockingbird Foundation is a non-profit organization founded by Phish fans in 1996 to generate charitable proceeds from the Phish community.
And since we’re entirely volunteer – with no office, salaries, or paid staff – administrative costs are less than 2% of revenues! So far, we’ve distributed over $1,000,000 to support music education for children – hundreds of grants in all 50 states, with more on the way.
To be honest, I wouldn't seek medical help to "cure" my deafness. I'm proud to be deaf and being deaf defines me. The deaf community is strong and our culture is rich so I enjoy being deaf on so many degree. I couldn't speak for other deaf people but for the most part, many deaf would rather remain deaf until the day they die.
As for cochlear implants, I know many grown ups opting for CI however the bigger controversial issue is when doctors announce to the parents that their child is deaf and they WILL NOT HAVE A LANGUAGE,(research has shown that exposing babies to sign language, do in fact, give babies a language at young ages) and strongly recommend cochlear implants so they pretty much destroy whatever hearing the infant have to put in an implant. And high percentage had fail them, not having a language at first. This is why we need to educate people and cochlear implant is not an best method but sign language and exposure to the deaf culture.
I wear hearing aides and I am profoundly deaf but with intensive speech and hearing training, I can hear pretty well and my speech is clear(although I have the "deaf voice" (think of Lou Ferrigno)
I was st Superball and the festival promotors , Superfly, went out and contacted the equal access team who runs handicap accessibility for many other festivals, Bonnaroo including, and set up an ASL section. That also applied for the AC show.
I've been hitting up several New England shows and the last 6 SPAC shows and I bring my same team of ASL interpreters. They are awesome and they love Phish.
I want to give a proper shout out to SHARYN NEWCOMBE & DONNIE GIBBONS!
If you know what they look like, and you see them in the lot in the future, buy them a beer or two!
