The Mockingbird Foundation
The Mockingbird Foundation is a non-profit organization founded by Phish fans in 1996 to generate charitable proceeds from the Phish community.
And since we’re entirely volunteer – with no office, salaries, or paid staff – administrative costs are less than 2% of revenues! So far, we’ve distributed over $1,000,000 to support music education for children – hundreds of grants in all 50 states, with more on the way.
asking for recommendations since I hardly have any video tape from back in the day.
Honestly off the top of my head I would put down 1 & 2 confidently and #3 just as a powerful moment to watch. All of these can be found on YouTube.
1. Phish 10/31/94 “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”
(if watching this doesn’t reveal some of the raw brilliance and passion of Trey then maybe you’d better go check out a different flavor)
2. Phish 10/3/98 “Down By The River” w/ Neil Young
(this is uniquely special as the first jam Trey plays off Neil (19.5 mins) and Trey gets visually into it like a kid on a playground meeting his favorite baseball player, but a kid that is technically proficient) (the first 10-15 mins kill it, but like most guests, its hard to improve on "the phish"*
3. Allman Brother’s Band 3/12/09 “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed”
(this may not be my number three but it is special to see a stage full of Allmans, Warren, Derek Trucks (buddy guy even came out later) with Trey and Page. There is a moment when jamming and Warren and Derek both defer to Trey, who humbly leads the ship. Bad ass shit. The jam in itself is not a must have, but the moment gives me a chub)
if you have pro/matrix video from any of the following, id love to see them: 11/2/98 Dark Set, any of the Pro-shots from April 1999 Phil and Phriends (especially Viola Lee, Shakedown), the 8/9/98 Terrapin Station, or of course and pro-video from Big Cypress, or the 7/24/99 Fluffhead, 7/8/99 Fee, and on and on…like the Bethel Waves soundcheck, was video rolling? Im sure at somepoint someone was like “shit, videorecord this”
*improving on Phish's jams rarely comes through the addition of musicians. Exceptions to this rule may be: a percussionist (Karl Perazzo), Saxophone players, bluegrass specialists (which just turn phish into a giant bluegrass band, Horn sections (Giant Country Horns, Cosmic Country Horns, Peter Danforth(trumpet), Peter Apelbaum(alto sax),Dick soldber (violin), Bela Fleck (banjo), Jeff Moiser (Banjo). Phish w/ Flecktones (in their entirety seemingly worked but only lent to a much banter-ized YEM, 11min ghost, 7min Poor Heart, but others who play similar instruments tend to not make a mega sound, but moreover spend too much time deciding who will lead it or who wont. *(notable exceptions also extend to people who have been playing with Phish since the very early 90's (or earlier) like Aquarium Rescue Unit (see 5/5/93 for a cosmic 32 min YEM)
