Honestly... Neither one of these jams do a whole lot for me. However, I think this Ghost set the tone for a very special show and has some interesting playing that maybe got the guys warmed up for a huge jam session in set 2. The Tweezer also has bit of inspired improv on the back end, and the segue is genuine, but I will take this Ghost... A little more going on and a tad deeper.
09.09 - Stash over the 09.09 Ghost
This Ghost actually resembles the 07.15 version but is quite a bit more inspired to my ears. However, the pure originality of this Stash and the unique sounds that resonate out of this jam make this choice VERY easy for me. Trey lays down some gorgeous work here that tugs at your heart strings and also makes me wonder why he has never really gone this direction since. This jam flows perfectly and the tremolo is absolutely stunning! I am looking forward to hearing this one again!!
12.12 - Drowned over the 12.11 - Ghost -> 2001
Man, such a ridiculously tough choice for me. I know we are going to run into this problem a lot in this tournament, but I have to give the nod here to this Drowned that really stretches its legs and finds some amazing space about halfway into the jam. Really psychedelic playing and such a huge jam! It is so engaging after the 12-15 minute mark that it doesn't nearly feel like the half hour monster that it is! The Ghost -> 2001 is really quite amazing itself and honestly, I may have voted for this combo over any number of other jams in the bracket. I have to go with Drowned though, by a smidge, strictly from a deep space standpoint! These far out explorations are what really get me off, and this one is a good example of how far they could really go in 99. Looking forward to hearing either one of these again, but I think the Drowned is the more accomplished piece to make a push deeper in the tourney!
10.10 - Jam ->YEM over 12.02 YEM
This one is also quite easy for me. I mildly enjoy the 12.02 YEM and it's eeriness, the chord progression is just a bit repetitive and they really don't take it in any uniformed direction, they just kind of let it fade out into the vocal jam. It sounds unique in a way, but ultimately it's a pretty boring jam. I know there is a fair amount of hype around the 12.02 YEM, but I simply don't get it. It doesn't hold a candle to the 10.10 YEM IMO. The 10.10 version has an absolutely orgasmic groove that morphs and swirls all around before reaching a really cool ending sans vocal jam. The effect that Mike uses throughout just fits so perfectly and allows the other guys to really push this one into a disco-dance space jam! Add on the beautiful several minutes of unique exploration before the song proper that defines the 99 sound and you have a jam that could make a push for the round of 32! This YEM really is a beast! I will be shocked if the 12.02 version wins this one... Not even close in their size and scope!
