The Mockingbird Foundation
The Mockingbird Foundation is a non-profit organization founded by Phish fans in 1996 to generate charitable proceeds from the Phish community.
And since we’re entirely volunteer – with no office, salaries, or paid staff – administrative costs are less than 2% of revenues! So far, we’ve distributed over $1,000,000 to support music education for children – hundreds of grants in all 50 states, with more on the way.
Cars were trying to pass through the milling fans on this one tiny towns street. Someone was very slightly bumped by a car, or maybe fell off balance a bit and caught himself by putting his hands down on the car. Whatever happened I heard it was just something simple like that. Then maybe a bit of bickering about the situation, like "Shit watch out , man!" on both sides.
So then the riot geared police are instructed to start moving the line. From the news video it looks like the kids were already mostly off the streets and nothing really happened after that. It just seemed like a big deal because of the riot gear. The fans were very respectful and compliant from what I heard (I was at our hotel room). Mostly because they were high and holding, I'd assume.
A fan was interviewed after the "incident" and gave his name as Marcus Esquandolas and was featured in the next day's paper as such. What was really cool was the next show, during You Enjoy Myself, when Trey got to the Marcus Esquandolas part he said, "21 year old Phish fan, Marcus Esquandolas" getting a huge roar from the crowd who'd read that morning's article.
A side note:
I've been lucky enough to have seen my first show at The American Theater in St. Louis (8/16/93) where I actually was smacked directly in the head and knocked to the floor, by one of the the big balls they threw out into the audience in Big Ball jam and where I heard arguably one of the best live Reba's. I traveled with my brother to London, Amsterdam (7/12/96 arguably the worst show ever performed) and Italy where we hung with Page on the back steps before the show and just chit-chatted and I requested a song, during the show when I looked up and saw Trey staring at me dancing in a room of only about 100 people and I lifted up my Antilope logo'd part of my t-shirt and he played it a couple songs later, and also stood so close to Fish during his vacuum solo I could have turned the vacuum off if I'd been so inclined. I jumped a back gate in Atlanta after slippin' the guard a $20 and then my brother pulled me up into the front section in between sets, and also funked out the summer of '98 at Desert Sky, in Arizona which was sublime after watching (and then being a part of) kids pull one over on a poor lady holding a bouquet of front section wristbands, but when I went to Red Rocks, I gave my fourth night ticket to my brother, because the third night (8/6/96) was the best show I'd ever experienced.
Hope this helps; it was fun to relive. Love ya'll!
