The Mockingbird Foundation
The Mockingbird Foundation is a non-profit organization founded by Phish fans in 1996 to generate charitable proceeds from the Phish community.
And since we’re entirely volunteer – with no office, salaries, or paid staff – administrative costs are less than 2% of revenues! So far, we’ve distributed over $1,000,000 to support music education for children – hundreds of grants in all 50 states, with more on the way.
What do you guys play? I’m always e4 as white, and with black I always play the Sicilian (c5) against e4, and in a normal open Sicilian I like the Najdorf ( 5...a6 is the defining move of this system). Against 1. d4 I like the kings Indian defense with 1...nf6, g6, bg7, d6, 0-0, and then usually a slight side line with na6 if I can. Depends on what white plays though, he gets to dictate.
If you’re a beginner, I recommend finding a couple openings that suit your style of play (temperament) and sticking with them. Learn them front to back and you will improve quickly. The lessons you learn from those few can usually be applied broadly.
I generally like a fighting game, so e4 kings pawn (white), Sicilian (black), and kings Indian (black) all suit me. I play them almost exclusively unless my
Opponent forces me out of those. Usually not the best to do that unless you’re significantly better or more prepared in a specific line though. If you like a slower, more positional game, play d4 as white (queens pawn).
Lately I’ve been kicking around the idea of playing an open tournament for amateurs here in Chicago. Ive never played a rated over the board game, but slowly working myself up the idea.
Hope all your chess endeavors are going well. Stick with it. Hit me up if you ever want to nerd out about it!
