The Mockingbird Foundation
The Mockingbird Foundation is a non-profit organization founded by Phish fans in 1996 to generate charitable proceeds from the Phish community.
And since we’re entirely volunteer – with no office, salaries, or paid staff – administrative costs are less than 2% of revenues! So far, we’ve distributed over $1,000,000 to support music education for children – hundreds of grants in all 50 states, with more on the way.

Love that you guys got more into jazz this past year. Bebop was definitely my favorite too but there's so much. You can go back to the roots in swing, blues and ragtime. There were standards that EVERYone covered, but either you had a singer who could sing... or it was an instrumental.
Spontaneous improvisation, complex chord structure, and multiple rhythms defined the genre, and that in turn defined the jam bands we listen to today.
And of course there is the social significance of people of color and women being allowed to express their artistic ideas and talents.
Phish certainly have explored jazz in their development, even if they are far from a jazz band. Maybe that's why Steely Dan was raised in this thread. They may not be a jamband, but might have some similar jazz influences.
Thanks for chiming in, @EvenCarlSagan and @jimmysdad.
