The Mockingbird Foundation
The Mockingbird Foundation is a non-profit organization founded by Phish fans in 1996 to generate charitable proceeds from the Phish community.
And since we’re entirely volunteer – with no office, salaries, or paid staff – administrative costs are less than 2% of revenues! So far, we’ve distributed over $1,000,000 to support music education for children – hundreds of grants in all 50 states, with more on the way.
Obviously it is imperfect that we currently have to choose between D or R or essentially not participate. The D/R stranglehold has done great damage to our republic over the past half century, to the point that our checks and balances have pretty severely weakened and we are now in a really precarious moment. The two paths to breaking the D/R stranglehold and preserving the republic that I see are:
1) Change the way we elect people. First-past-the-post elections lead to two-party systems, it's just math. Ranked choice would open things up to non D/R voices, which could restore accountability to our government. I think some amount of proportional representation may be good too, but that would be a big change for us, so we'd really have to call in the experts on that one.
2) New coalition formed from 50% in the middle. The Ds and Rs are both increasingly catering to the ideological fringes of their coalitions, leaving a gaping hole for a new coalition to emerge in the middle. A 50% from the middle coalition could have the potential to be a far more reasonable, responsible steward of our government than the Ds and Rs have been. Anyone else Yang-curious?
