Even if you take away all 894 of his goals, he still is the leading scorer of all time on assists alone. He has more assist than any other player in the history of the game has goals and assists combined. Agreed. Also remember that Gretzky played in the era of two line passes, neutral zone traps and interference and slashing being called much differently. The NHL has made tons of rule changes to increase offense, and can you imagine Gretzky training with the advanced training techniques that McDavid has? Gretzky was still putting up 100+ point seasons when goalies like Roy, Hasek, Richter, Belfour, Cujo, Ranford, etc. were in the crease. He might not be putting up 3 consecutive seasons with 200+ points, but I do think he would retire as the all time points leader no matter what era he played in.
