The Mockingbird Foundation
The Mockingbird Foundation is a non-profit organization founded by Phish fans in 1996 to generate charitable proceeds from the Phish community.
And since we’re entirely volunteer – with no office, salaries, or paid staff – administrative costs are less than 2% of revenues! So far, we’ve distributed over $1,000,000 to support music education for children – hundreds of grants in all 50 states, with more on the way.
I was not there, as that was the night of our HS Prom, which I actually went to... that said, my date came to my first show @ Foxborough on 7/2 and we crashed at someone's condo with you guys after the show.
The Foxborough show is widely available and pretty damned good (at that point I had no idea how rare a Playin' opener was)... Also, the Shakedown>Jack Straw from 7/9/89 is great, as is the China>Rider second set opener...
fun fact: if you listen to an audience of 7/9/89, you'll hear the crowd acknowledge the China Cat riff, and then a few moments later the crowd goes nuts for no apparent reason... well, I was way up front, and the reason is that it was insanely hot and humid that July day, and a few guys from the East Rutherford NJ fire department appeared on either side of the stage and started hosing down the crowd. It felt good.
I like stories.
