The Mockingbird Foundation
The Mockingbird Foundation is a non-profit organization founded by Phish fans in 1996 to generate charitable proceeds from the Phish community.
And since we’re entirely volunteer – with no office, salaries, or paid staff – administrative costs are less than 2% of revenues! So far, we’ve distributed over $1,000,000 to support music education for children – hundreds of grants in all 50 states, with more on the way.
First set was somewhat typical for them. It started with piano, vaguely bluesy. It retained a dark/mysterious edge throughout. Linear build up to a climax (which got really loud, droning and intense) and gradual diminuendo to silence. I was amazed at Chris Abrahams' use of the low notes throughout (I love how in most recording he has so much presence in the low end), and Tony Bucks had all sort of additional gadgets/supplemental percussion. At some point he was hitting a floor tom with what looked like a piece of a tambourine (like, if you broke a tambourine and just kept an arc of it).
The second set was my favorite. It began with a pretty melodic figure by Swanton on the bass. Abrahams immediately followed and began improvising around that melody. The whole piece had this nostalgic but upbeat sentiment. It also got very rhythmic and loud pretty fast. It was really fun. I kept thinking about Abillera from "Chemist" during the whole set, as well as Further from "Three". It didn't climax as hard as the previous piece but they managed to make a couple of heel turns first getting super dark and then melodic again. It died down pretty quickly rather than slowly dwindling,
Both sets were around 40 minutes.
Also I was seated next to a guy with semi-professional camera and microphones, he told me he was recording the whole thing, so I asked him about it. He told me he intends to upload it if he gets permission, so I will post a link here if he manages to.
