The Mockingbird Foundation
The Mockingbird Foundation is a non-profit organization founded by Phish fans in 1996 to generate charitable proceeds from the Phish community.
And since we’re entirely volunteer – with no office, salaries, or paid staff – administrative costs are less than 2% of revenues! So far, we’ve distributed over $1,000,000 to support music education for children – hundreds of grants in all 50 states, with more on the way.
As far as I can tell, in my own listening, it seems that Can was hitting an improvisational peak in the mid 70s. I have heard a few officially released bootleg recordings dated to 1975 and 1976, and they are so powerful. They just lock into a rhythm and sit there for minutes on end and charge forward instrumentally, sometimes increasing the weight of the music and sometimes letting it float. Their part in influencing the later German association with techno, with its infinite rhythms and heavy beats with ever changing musical decorations, is clear.
Of course, much has already been said about the influence of the Grateful Dead on Phish. I don’t aim to add much to that here.
But what about the indirect lineage between Can and Phish? Can and 1999 Phish are undeniably intertwined through history. Think of the 20 min+ 1999-00 Ghosts ands 2001s and Sands and the unending jams of Big Cypress. Hear some of the Can bootlegs I will name.
Those of you that are already very familiar with Can (and likely more knowledgeable about them than me) and those who are just curious, I want to explore the intersection of these three bands. How does Can intersect with Phish, even indirectly? How does Can contrast and compare with the Grateful Dead? How is each band a product of its home-base scene; Phish in VT, Dead in San Fran/CA, and Can in Germany/Continental Europe in their respective eras?
The three bootlegs from Can that I am the most familiar with and can’t recommend enough are:
1) Live in Brighton 1975 (My Favorite)
2) Live in Stuttgart 1975
3 Live in Cuxhaven 1976
You can find these on any streaming site, I believe. I will try to find some Youtube links to be accessible for all.
