The Mockingbird Foundation
The Mockingbird Foundation is a non-profit organization founded by Phish fans in 1996 to generate charitable proceeds from the Phish community.
And since we’re entirely volunteer – with no office, salaries, or paid staff – administrative costs are less than 2% of revenues! So far, we’ve distributed over $1,000,000 to support music education for children – hundreds of grants in all 50 states, with more on the way.
I would never pay for a 1, 2, or 3 person package as those are too expensive for my taste. In 2019 & 2020 I bought the cheapest 4 person / 4 day package and shared the costs with 3 friends (Phish played only 3 shows at the Barcelo but packages have always been a minimum of 4 days).
My 2019 soundcheck experience remains my all time favorite highlight from Phish Mexico. I got high and swam during the entire soundcheck in the Barcelo's beautiful little bay. In 2020 I was too cheap to buy a 5 day package and regretted missing soundcheck at the Moon that year. I also wasn't able to buy a 4 day package during the 2020 initial onsale but got one off of the waitlist the next day.
Because I didn't want to miss the 2022 soundcheck and I also didn't want to get shut out again during the initial onsale, I begrudgingly bought a 4 person / 5 day ocean view room package during the 2022 onsale (ocean view was one price tier more expensive than the cheapest package). Although fan interest in attending Phish Mexico has waned somewhat since 2022, the cheapest 4 day packages still sell out the quickest.
While I enjoyed catching the 2022 soundcheck, I also learned that my 2019 Barcelo experience of swimming during soundcheck cannot be replicated at the Moon. The soundcheck sound levels don't seem to be as loud at the Moon and there's always a bit of wind blowing the sound ashore. Yeah the ocean also isn't as nice at the Moon but I still enjoyed swimming there in 2020 & 2022.
I learned that the best way to do Phish Mexico right is by adding more days to either side of the Moon Palace concerts, but don't stay at an all inclusive (at least I don't want to be at an AI if I can help it). Isla Mujeres is a sweet, close by spot for a little r&r before or after the Moon Palace. I stayed there for a few days after the 2020 event and for a few days before the 2022 event. Both Isla Mujeres and nearby Puerto Morelos are good choices if you only want to add 2-3 extra days to your trip. Tulum still retains some charm but I wouldn't stay that far from the Cancun airport unless I added 3 days, or more, to my trip.
I've never spent as much as $15k on Phish Mexico. In 2022 my husband & I shared the cost of a 4 person 5 day Moon package with friends and stayed 3 weeks in Mexico (it was his first Phish Mexico, ie, the only time I had to pay for two people). We spent two weeks driving around the Yucatan in a rental car. All told it was $10k - $11k. Our half of the 4 person / 5 day Nizuc package cost the same as the 15 days we spent exploring the Yucatan on our own.
Renting the car wasn't crazy expensive. We could've saved anywhere from a little to a lot of money by choosing cheaper places to eat and sleep. But we decided to go big after spending over a year at home during the pandemic. No regrets at all. And I don't feel the need to return to the Moon Palace ever again (although I love exploring Mexico; it's such an amazing country with a rich cultural history).
The cheapest 2026 package for 4 people / 5 days at Sunrise / Nizuc appears to be $2,570 per person (although navigating through the accommodation options was rather wonky).
